Το μαγνήσιο είναι το χημικό στοιχείο με ατομικό αριθμό 12 και χημικό σύμβολο Mg. Ο συνηθισμένος βαθμός οξείδωσης του είναι +2. Πρόκειται για το δεύτερο (2ο κατά σειρά ατομικής μάζας) μέταλλο αλκαλικών γαιών. Το όγδοο (8ο) κατά σειρά αφθονίας στο φλοιό της Γης (2% κατά βάρος) και το ένατο (9ο) γενικά στο σύμπαν. Το τελευταίο οφείλεται στο γεγονός ότι σχετικά εύκολα παράγεται από τα υπερκαινοφανή άστρα, από την κύρια σειρά πυρηνικών συντήξεων.
